Purpose: This scholarship represents the Atlanta Alumni Chapter’s pledge and commitment to assist the University in maintaining quality students from metro Atlanta and surrounding areas of Georgia. IT IS NAMED IN HONOR OF GEORGE G. GEIGER ONE OF TWO SURVIVING FOUNDERS OF OUR CHAPTER.
A NATIVE OF SAVANNAH, GEORGIA, JUDGE GEIGER IS A 1952 BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION GRADUATE AND SERVED AS THE CHAPTER’S PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT. HE WAS ONE OF THE FIRST FOUR AFRICAN-AMERICANS TO ENTER LAW SCHOOL AT THE WOODROW WILSON COLLEGE OF LAW AFTER INTEGRATION AND SHARED MAGNA CUM LAUDE HONORS WITH TWO STUDENTS UPON GRADUATION. JUDGE GEIGER WAS THE FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN APPOINTED TO SERVE ON THE BENCH AS A REFEREE (LATER NAMED ASSOCIATE jUDGE) FOR THE FULTON COUNTY JUVENILE COURT AND ALSO SERVED AS THE ASSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEY FOR TEN YEARS. hE IS THE FIRST AND ONLY AFRICAN-AMERICAN MALE WHOSE PORTRAIT IS NOW DISPLAYED IN THE FOYER OF THE FULTON COUNTY JUVENILE COURT BUILDING, AND HIS NAME IS ON DISPLAY AT THE CENTER FOR CIVIC AND HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE STATE BAR OF GEORGIA LAW MUSEUM. alumni are convinced that high academic achievers from Georgia are needed on the campus to serve as role models for all students matriculating at the University.
Level of Award: depending upon the applications received, a minimum of two awards will be presented to the deserving students who meet the eligibility criteria.
